Can't get the Real-time clock (RTC) to work on Maple Rev5

No matter what I do, I can't get the RTC to work. I'm attempting to write my own driver for it based on documentation and other online sources, but I've had no luck.

Is there an "official" API/library available for the RTC on the STM32F103 processor?

The ST peripheral library has functions for the RTC and examples of how to use it. I recently went through it, adding a 32kHz crystal to the Maple Mini. I started out with Chan's example code*, but ported it over to using ST's library functions.

Are you using the 8MHz crystal as clock source, or have you added a 32kHz crystal?
