anon edits disabled. Looks like a lot of the spam was cleaned up by users - particularly becker. Thanks!

Anonymous edits aren't the problem.
There are dozens of accounts created in groups where one of the accounts has been used to post the spam. The other accounts still exist. This isn't random defacement. It's commercial, most likely to increase the search engine score for the linked-to sites. As long as the pages are reachable they win and are encouraged to continue.

we will try and come up with a more permanent solution. Thanks for your vigilance.

Six forum spams by user farewellhcl0808 were deleted.

Ok, I've gone through the list of all wiki pages and deleted any spammy ones, and also blocked the users who created them.
Many, many thanks to becker and robodude666, who had cleared out the huge volumes of spam before I even got there. You guys rock.
Hopefully, the CAPTCHA improvements will keep new spam accounts from being created so quickly that the wiki is unusable. If not, we're back to the drawing board.

Thanks to gbulmer and Stephen for keeping an eye on forum spam, too. We're working on strengthening the forum captcha.

Hello-
The thread started by user Floches "HELP led choice" is also a spam. Simply google the first line of Floches post and you will discover the original forum where it was posted.
gbulmer, I am sorry you spent the time responding. These spams are like the old-fashioned "beware of new computer virus" emails. People would waste time and bandwidth sending messages about a fictitious problems.
gbulmer, in a recent spam post user Cuddeback at least had the courtesy of quoting a real post from you!
The question(s) posted by these may be somewhat "legitimate", but if the user includes link spam then I say the entire post (and not just the spam link) should be deleted.
As other moderators have noticed, instead of simply starting new threads some link spammers are trying to hide their spams in existing legitimate threads. This may increase the time their posts exist.
To help the system administrators delete the users I suggest posting the names of the offending users in this thread (or a similar thread which has the word "spam" in the title). Simply create a link to the offending message (or user). Remember, the # sign at the end of each post is an internal hyperlink to that specific post.
If we simply make a comment about a spam inside a legitimate thread the administrators might not see the internal "please remove user" message.

Stephen and any other moderator that wants to do this -- that would be great. It'd also be a good way for us to know how well (or not) our forum is doing compared to the spambots.

I'm happy to post a link to a user to spam thread, and will use this one until further notice.
Floches signature was an ad, and hence appears to be a spammer http://forums.leaflabs.com/profile.php?id=3951
Cuddeback signature was the same ad (I think), and hence appears to be a spammer http://forums.leaflabs.com/profile.php?id=3954Posted 4 years ago # -
thanks; both accounts deleted. i'm going to delete any user whose first post includes a spam signature, even if that post seems human-made. even if a person posts it, spam is spam, and not ok.

user scxcvl posted spam.

and hes gone.
By the way, we have been having some trouble with our paid Akismet spam filter, I wonder if recent increases in spam are related.
