Just placed an order for a MAPLE. Working since quite a long time with Arduino Duemilanove and Mega. Have installed a S65 Display and a Asncylabs Wifi Shield on both Arduinos for a Homeautomation System. I am really eager to implement them on a MAPLE. Has anyone operating experience with MAPLE and Arduino Shields?

Hi Starbug!
We've successfully used Ethernet and MIDI shields and are testing some others; you can check the compatibility page (http://leaflabs.com/docs/maple/compatability/ ) to see if there are any hardware differences that would inoperable. The software libraries for both of those shields will probably need some modifications to work smoothly; now that we know somebody wants to use them we'll put those at the top of our queue!

I am also interested in Wifi. I'm building a volumetric POV that I wish to stream 3d video content to, and this will require me transferring 1,422,000 bytes/second from my computer onto the Maple (or approx under 10.85Mbps - under the 12Mbps USB bandwidth).
The problem with using a USB connection is that the Maple will be stationed on a platform spinning at 1200 RPM. I haven't yet been able to find some sort of swivel connector I can use to establish a USB link between the Maple and my PC. As an alternative I've been interested in the Wifi's shield compatibility with the Maple and if it will allow a high enough bandwidth to send the content across.

MessiahAndrw, you might want to look in to a rotary electrical connector (also called a slip ring)? Try "'slip ring' usb" on google, or "4 conductor rotary electrical connector" for a more expensive but reliable device. The brushings might kill USB performance. SPI is probably a more reliable connection vs. USB though.. USB has a lot of overhead as it's designed for complicated topologies of many hubs and devices, and you would almost certainly need to implement isochronous mode to achieve anything like the 12Mbps theoretical maximum.
WiFi though! I don't know what your throughput would be like from a 20Hz rotating frame of reference. As mention above the Arduino WiFi shields should work fine with some software porting; we don't have an ETA on porting those libraries, but the more people that mention their interest faster we'll get to it!
I'm also excited about integrating with Open Mesh routers (http://open-mesh.com, see http://www.flickr.com/photos/48069758@N08/4555765533/ for scale). These cost only $20, run linux with a couple megs of RAM, and have a serial port that can be hacked to interface to, eg, a Maple. Once removed from their case they aren't all that much larger than a wifi shield. Not sure how much bandwidth you could get over the serial port connection though.

The Wifi shields seem to have a 2Mbps maximum data rate. I have been looking at Wireless USB, however all I can find are $300 4-port wireless USB hubs (that's way above my price range).
Open Mesh is interesting since it's so cheap. Perhaps I could construct some sort of USB->ethernet->OpenMesh->ethernet->USB network.
There is what claims to be a "full-speed USB peripheral/host controller" shield (http://proto-pic.co.uk/products/USB-Host-Shield.html ). I'm suspicious of what it means by "full-speed" and if that includes the transfer speed between the Maple and shield. If it was truly full speed then the Maple could host a cheap Wifi USB adapter (http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.24886 ).

I've thought about mounting a TRS connector (headphone jacks) and using that just to send the two USB data lines, and connect the pin lines to a battery.

hmm, im skeptical that youll get the audio lines running usb speed properly. Maybe. Those are very high speed differential lines, make sure you terminate/condition them properly. checkout http://www.beyondlogic.org/usbnutshell/usb1.htm for more info on the requirements of usb hardware and software. This would be an impressive hack.

hi,I have flymalpe rev3 I'm interested in connecting a wifi sheild to it, I'm new to this can anyone help me with the cabling between the flymaple and the wifi shield?
Posted 2 years ago # -
in the maple site they say the wifi shield is compatible but I searched all this forum and nothing helped me in running a wifi shield on flymaple, why do you say that wif shield work and you do not provide the costumers with any documentations for it
