   @poslathian,

   Thank you for the short explanation describing what LL has been doing behind the scenes to reduce the amount of spam. It helps to know that the LL admins are aware of the problem and that the automated barriers have blocked most of the spam. Let's hope the catpcha continues to in the future.

   crenn and gbulmer have been doing the heavy lifting. There was one day this week when I saw five or six spams. After opening the "spam list" to add the names I returned to the posts, but they were already deleted. It has been a team effort. I just got the conversation started.

   @moderators and admins-

   There seems to be a big decrease in spam-bot generated junk. Thanks to the admins and other moderators!

   After spammer accounts are deleted by the admins is there a bbPress configuration option to blocked these spam accounts from being recreated?

   My assumption is that the spammers use the same username-password combinations to spam on different forums. If they need to use different usernames they may get discouraged.

   Spammer eileen**** spammed before the spam account purge, but new spams have appeared from this user. The same applies to spammer linseo****blog.

   What do you think?

   StephenFromNYC - why not just block the accounts, and leave them in place? Then they have to waste time discovering that their account is bloscked and useless.

   Ideally allow them to go through a (automated) re-registration system (including some captchas, so they do useful work for society), to reset their passwords, but hold everything they post in a private 'pending' queue (which is not published) so that they have to put even more effort in, and get no reward :-)

   BTW - I thought there was a post suggesting we continue to add names to the previous list, so there are a couple of spams I added to that, rather than the latest one.

   @gbulmer,

   Yes, I suggested starting a new list even though the original list (largely populated by spam-bot names, not individuals) was not deleted by the admins when the accounts were purged.

   I was hoping for some direct guidance from the admins regarding when to start a new list.

   Considering the confusion regarding "which list" I suggest using the new list. The new list is not too long (so it is easy to merge it with the original list), so the couple of spams you added to the original list was not a wasted effort.

   What do you think?

   @gbulmer,

   I mentioned the new list again, because I was hoping all the moderators were working together. I was not sure if you were using the new list or if crenn was adding names to the new list of spammers. Good to hear that we are working together.

   I do not know why my post was duplicated. I deleted the extra copy. Thanks for the heads up.

   I've been using the new list of late because it seems that it was just coincidental that the spammers were using the same user name as spammers before.

    I undeleted the previous post, however I'll use the latest post anyway. Have you guys been having trouble logging in from time to time?

    edit (StephenFromNYC): I have not experienced any login problems. Just brain freezes.

    StephenFromNYC - How about, who ever finds spam starts a new name list?
    Then we'll just add to that until LeafLabs blocks them.

    We could also delete the previous list?

    I've been killing some of them.

    Aside from spam, the current forum software (bbpress) has lots of bugs (eg, count of forum topics is negative (lulz) and there are a river of PHP deprecation warnings in our log files). I haven't found a non-PHP forum package that looks good (I have a personal vendetta against PHP), but i'm looking at migrating the forum software to Vanilla 2. Anybody have experience with that package? Of course all non-spam posts and accounts would be migrated and i'd do what I can to redirect URL structure.
