Dear Leafblowers

Today may Maple (R3) stopped responding. I have a new MacbookPro.
For the last couple of days when I have been using it, I experienced that I could not get contact to it when plugged into one of my USB ports, while it worked in the other USB port. Every now and then I would get errors uploading to the board, although the program compiled fine. Today it suddenly stopped responding to the upload commands at all.
I realised then that I could no longer see the tty.ubsmodemXXXXX under Serial Port, and when deleting the Maple R3 entry from the Network settings, and repluggin the maple doesn't bring up the usual "A New Network Interface Has Been Detected" dialogue.
Running dmesg in terminal I got:

My reset button doesn't seem to work. When pressing it I don't get the usual resetting response of the blinking LED, and trying to press the reset button and then the (pin 38) button, nothing happens either.

As far as I can understand I am bricked, and the buttons not working makes me doubt, whether trying to reflash the bootloader will work (or be possible). Any suggestions?

My first thought is that the hitting the reset button should ALWAYS result in the light blinking for a quick burst as long as their is power to the boards and the bootloader is not corrupted. The only way to corrupt the bootloader would be to upload a new one, or two write code that writes to the flash (which requires actively unlocking the flash by writing a special value to a special register, so not an accidental error).

If the board fails to blink, and you didnt do either of the above, then it sounds like hardware failure. However, your dmesg dump is interesting, because it implies that the operating system did at least TRY to enumerate the device. For this to happen, Maple needs to run at least some code, because it is electrically disconnected (sort of) from the USB bus by default, and requires software to connect it.

Do try flashing a new bootloader and see what happens. Also, what board is this (rev4, rev5 fall, rev5 spring, RET6 Edition). It is also VERY odd that it was working in some USB ports but not others, perhaps you burned out a port? Perhaps the board was damaged in the same incident that burned the port out?

Personally, after having burned out enough USB ports (ugh), I always use a HUB when I know Ill be fooling with anything that could damage the USB port.

I might also suggest making sure its not a mechanical issue with the button. Press really hard on the reset button, check for any visual evidence of mechanical failure (button broke off or something odd). You can even tie the "RESET" pin broken out on the bottom left header to ground and hard reset the board without the button

I'm having similar symptoms. I have a brand new RET6 board that came in the mail today. I downloaded the MapleIDE 0.0.10 beta which was linked from the RET6 page. I tried to run a sketch, the Blink sketch that comes with the IDE, just to see if the board was working. It showed up on my MacBook Pro as a new network device. I compiled the sketch and uploaded it to the board. It didn't appear to work, and from that point forward, the board is not seen by the computer. The LED still blinks when I power it on. I've set it in Perpetual Bootload Mode and the LED keeps blinking when I do that, as expected. But the board never shows up under Tools > Serial Ports, and if I try to upload a compiled sketch, the IDE tells me it can't find the DFU device.

Any suggestions?

First off, while in perpetual bootloader mode, you should NOT see Maple come up as a serial port. It actually comes up as a DFU device. So you are OK there.

I am going to guess here that perhaps you did not select Maple RET6 from the tools->boards menu drop down? If you didnt do this, it might have defaulted to another board and flashed some code for a different chip. Just use the perpetual bootloader mode to upload a new binary with the RET6 selected from the dropdown menu.

Or, perhaps you did select the right board, but still failed to get blinky. This is odd. I did notice that in the 0.0.10beta some of the example sketches had not been "generalized" to work across the different boards, for example in the blinky sketch we see

ledPin = 13;

whereas to be cross-compatible with all the boards it should be:

ledPin = BOARD_LED_PIN; // macro that gets set to the "right" pin for any board

BUT, on the Maple RET6 the LED pin is also 13 (just like on Maple), so I dont think thats it. Any more info?

I'm pretty sure I did have the RET6 board selected, but I've tried it again this morning. I can upload sketches in perpetual bootloader mode, but they don't appear to work. I tried the Blink sketch and the Fading sketch, and the LED doesn't light up in either one. I used the default code for each, so the LED was in pin 13 for Blink and pin 9 for Fading. Here's the response I get when I compile and upload Fading:

Okay, I have some more information. I've gotten the computer to recognize the board, and upload sketches via the serial port without going into perpetual bootloader mode. What I did was switch from "LeafLabs Maple RET6 Edition to RAM" to "LeafLabs Maple RET6 Edition to Flash". Programs downloaded to Flash run, and reset the board in such a way that it appears to the computer and I can select the serial port. If I switch back to downloading to RAM, I get a deaf board and the programs don't run. So it appears that either there's something wrong with the RAM on my board or there's a problem in MapleIDE 0.0.10 in uploading to RAM on the RET6. That's how it seems to me, anyway.

It's possible that there's a problem with the linker script used when compiling code for RAM on the RET6 Edition. I'll look into it and let you know what I find.
