Bluetooth for Maple

Hi All,

For my final project i'm using the maple to read some data from a few sensors and sending it over bluetooth to an android phone. I was wondering if any one knew of a simple setup to send data to the Android phone.

I was hoping that i could find a bluetooth sheild where I could use serial print to send the data to the bluetooth device. Some advice as to what piece of hardware is capable of this or how i should go about setting up a simple way to send a few numbers from the Maple to the phone would be much appreciated.

Why you can't use any USART-BT module? Such as http://www.sparkfun.com/products/10253 with 4 contacts. Or some first links from google

thanks for the response.

I saw the SFE BT products when I was looking for a BT device, i was looking at using the BlueSMirf, but the sample code i found uses the SoftwareSerial library on arduino and isn't available on the maple. I was thinking about importing it and hacking it to work, but i'm a little scared to embark on that mission with all the other things i need to do in the project plus school.
I also looked at the Iteadstudio Stackable Bluetooth shield V2.1 it uses ISRs as well as a few hardware feature which i think are Arduino specific.

I'm mostly wondering if anyone has used a specific BT device witht he maple and gotten it to work.

The Arduino uses the software serial library because its only serial interface (USART) is tied to the USB connection.
The Maple has several serial interfaces (USARTs), so you don't need a software serial library, you can use a real hardware serial interface.

I agree it is still work to get it going. When do you need to get bluetooth working?

thanks again for the response, I need to start sending some data as soon as I can so that the person working on the android app has some data to work with.

It doesn't need to be integrated into the final HW and SW till mid july the latest. do you think that this would be possible?

I think I'm going to get the BlueSMirf and make it work with an arduino I have at home and send mock data for the Android dev work and at the same time try to get it to work on the Maple with a little help from you guys.

I guess what i sort of really wanted to know to start with was which BT Shields have worked, according to the website "Some Bluetooth <-> UART boards have been tested and are known to work"

we use the RN-41 modules from sparkfun all the time. The real requirement is that the UART pins on your bluetooth module are 3.3V - for example this http://www.sparkfun.com/products/10559 device should work fine. The exact bluetooth modules we have a bunch of in the lab seem discontinued on sparkfun and replaced by the "bluetooth mate gold" which I suppose should also work, as long as you power it off Maple's 3.3V supply.

I'm waiting on the BlueSMiRF silver to get here and get working on it, it's based on the same chip so if i cant get it to work with the board i'll just add some wires and use it via UART.

Heh, yea these ethernet/wifi/bluetooth/usb->serial modules are popular for exactly that reason (uhh, SO easy). Although, I recall once we got these bluetooth->serial modules from china one time that were completely undocumented, except for a single page of commands. It took the whole afternoon to figure out that you needed to append "AT" to the beginning of every command to make it work. Apparently I am too young to realize this should have been obvious.
