@jessb:
1) My suggestion is that the admins delete the individual "xxx is spamming" messages after you delete the users (because I do not see how a public record of the spammers usernames is helpful; I do not know if you keep a local copy of the offending usernames). Ideally, the "sorry about the spam" topic should contain only the current spammer account names which should be at most one or two pages long and posts relevant to reducing spam.
2) Would it help if we also included the ip addresses of the spammers, or is listing just their usernames sufficient?
Feel free to delete this post if this question shares too much information.
@jwestervelt:
1) Thanks for flagging the spam (on August 21). I deleted the spam message and my earlier message that the same (ab)user was leaving spam. I left your "[username] is spamming" message to alert jessb of the forum account name the spammer is using so the user can be deleted.
Forum "moderators" are allowed to delete spam messages, but only system admins (eg. jessb) are allowed to delete users. Ideally, the system admins only need one "[username] is spamming" message to delete a current user. Less clutter.
2) @jwestervelt, I think you misunderstood the purpose of my vague message to jessb, which I am keep deleting and pushing to the top so my question and suggestion are not missed by jessb or another admin. Once I receive an answer to the question I will delete this message (if the admins do not after they answer the question).
I have been on this forum for about 2 years, and I do not remember any case of a user/moderator/admin flagging a post which appeared to be spam, but which was not spam. I have not seen any user say "I just spent 30 minutes writing my last message. It was not spam. Why was it deleted?" In other words, I have not observed any incorrect or malicious "spam tagging".
I apologize for being vague, but I think it is counterproductive to leave the "[username] is spamming" messages on the forum. You'll have to read between the lines to understand what I mean. @jessb, if you want, I can send a private email with a more thorough explanation to the leaflabs info@ account.
Thanks to all. I have enjoyed reading recent posts to the forum.

StephenFromNYC, I drew mbolivar's attention to your post a while ago, If I see him on IRC again I'll nudge him towards it again.

@crenn:
Thanks for mentioning my "what information should we post when deleting spam" post to the admins. I was bumping my question to the top of the list, because I did not want it to get lost. I was hoping to get a quick response, because I do not know if having the question posted publicly causes more harm.
It is encouraging to see all the moderators helping out when we can.
Have a great week.
