   Greetings all,

   I just received a Maple Mini (R2), and have installed the IDE (0.0.11) on a WinXP machine, no errors or other notable departures from the QuickStart doc. Both the DFU and serial driver installations seemed to follow the QuickStart info for WinXP. I've tried setting the board type to both "Mini Rev 2 to Flash" and also "Mini Rev 2 to Ram."

   However, The nominal (DFU-based) bootloader isn't working, for either of those two settings. The error I get is

   ========

   Searching for DFU device [1EAF:0003]...
   dfu-util - (C) 2007-2008 by OpenMoko Inc.
   This program is Free Software and has ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY

   Couldn't find the DFU device: [1EAF:0003]

   ========

   I can get a new sketch downloaded *only* by using perpetual bootloader mode. That's better than nothing, but it's not nearly as easy as I'd like downloading a sketch to be, and it tricky to hit the timing needed, with those tiny buttons.

   Can anybody reading suggest how to get the normal (non-eternal-bootloader mode) bootload sequence to work? Or what diagnostic checks I ought to use to narrow down the issue to something more specific that I should change?

   The readme.txt file included with IDE 0.0.11 (for Windows) says the following:

   ========

   You can adjust this
   timing in the *preferences panel* (in milliseconds). What happens is that after
   reset, the programming operation either occurs too soon (dfu bootloader hasn't
   booted yet) or too late (bootloader has already begun exit procedure). The
   delay in the bootloader is already getting long, so its better to tweak the
   delay parameter to what best works on your system.

   ========

   Can anybody please indicate where the preferences panel is hiding -- or what pseudonym it's now under? If it can be accessed via the Maple IDE, it appears to be well hidden!

   Similarly, some guidelines about how to change the value, and/or exactly when one needs to hit the reset button with respect to messages in the IDE's status area would be much appreciated. I'll admit that even stock Arduino's sometimes need a second download attempt, but the Maple (mini at least) seems IMHO to be a cranky beast, at least as far as getting code down to it and running.

   Larry,

   Perhaps you have not selected the correct serial port from the drop down menu (tools->serial port). The Auto-reset feature you seek is implemented over the USB Serial port, so without the serial port selected it will not work.

   Let us know if this helps!

   Please take note that while in DFU (perpetual bootloader more or just after reset) mode, the serial port will NOT appear. Also, if you accidentally upload broken code (such as uploading maple code to a maple mini by selecting the wrong board accidentally), the Serial port will probably also not come up.

   I see three serial ports COM1, COM3 and COM5. I suspect the multiplicity is due to my unplugging/re-plugging the Maple Mini into my PC's USB. How do I determine which to select? The quickStart Doc says nothing about this, and IMHO, ought to.

   I'm going to guess that the highest number COM port is most likely to be the current one. Fingers crossed....

   for some reason nearly all systems have a COM1 and 2 or 3 by default...maybe some system utility creates them. If anyone knows the answer - it would be interesting. I would be on COM5, then COM3. I agree that this lack of clarity should be cleared up in the quickstart. Thanks!

   For me, at least, selecting the highest number COM port listed under tools->serial port is now giving me button-free downloads to my maple mini. Thanks for the quick response, and I hope this helps others.

   LarryP,

   I don't know of any good way to tell which is which, although your guess seems reasonable to me. If you find that "pick the highest numbered one" works well for you, I'd be happy to add a troubleshooting/faq item.

   Perhaps one way to get at a reasonable default is to put it in perpetual bootloader mode, check the list of COMs, then reset and let Maple boot normally and bring the up serial port - check the COMs again. The new one is the right one.

   This is probably easy to do for windows since you have to use perpetual boot mode to get the dfu drivers installed anyway.
