I've deleted user iguiyichm. We're rejiggering our server backend structure this week, so we haven't rolled out reCAPTCHA to the live machines yet, but rest assured that we haven't forgotten.
Sorry about the Spam!

I've deleted the user. Thank you for reminding us.
I've poked around all the preferences, and I can't seem to find a way to give moderators the ability to delete users. So for now, one of the LeafLabs staff will have to continue to do it.
Sorry about the delay on an improved CAPTCHA. As I mentioned on another thread, we're redoing our server backend in a manner which has delayed making changes to the forum. Rest assured that we haven't forgotten and are working on getting this done.

mbolivar - is there a way to have a new users first posts held for moderation (Google groups supports this).
If nothing shows until they get moderated, it might put some spammers off. The down-side is someone needs to read them :-(Posted 4 years ago # -
iguiyichm just posted some spam.

Cleaning it up now

Sigh; thanks, everyone. Deleted the user again. Poked the webmaster about moving this higher up on the priority queue.

The newest version of our anti-spam plugin, Human Test for bbPress (http://bbpress.org/plugins/topic/human-test/), has just been installed on our instance. From the changelog: "subtle changes to keep bots guessing wrong".
I'm looking into other moderation tools for future updates, as there is no (re)captcha plugin for bbPress as far as I can tell (see http://bbpress.org/plugins/).

Posting improvement suggestion / request
Hi mbolivar,I have noticed that the posting window has neither test-posting and edit, nor temporary saving.
It happened to me more than once that I lost my posting by temporarily opening another link while editing.
I also wish to see how my posting will look after final posting (especially when using html markups).
I think a 'save' and test-posting keys would be of great help.
Thanks

hey samtal,
sorry to hear that the forum software has been giving you trouble. unfortunately, we're kind of stuck with it for now. about test-posting, though: i believe you should be able to edit your post for a short time after you've first submitted it. maybe you can use that as a workaround for not having test-posting?

Hello mbolivar
Sorry for the late reply, I was not aware of your reply.
I did not write the forum software gave me trouble. No trouble, just goodies, for which I am very glad.Yes, I can use the send-post and edit to check and correct, but stiil need a way to temporarily save.
As a precaution, I have learned to copy and paste parts on any html editor while writing. Thanks for the good work and keep it up and running !

The vast majority of recent posts are link spammers, or reverts to their changes. They are deleting the entire content of valid pages, as well as creating new pages.
The link spammers only need a few hours of the pages remaining valid for their work to be worthwhile. In that time a search engine spider will have scanned the page. By letting the vandalism continue unchecked now, they are encouraged to put even more effort in the future.

Please do something about the wiki spammers.
The volume of spam edits is now so large that the entire wiki will be destroyed in less than a day of no attention.
Hoping that users will help revert hundreds of daily changes is a temporary measure. It doesn't solve the core problem -- the old contents are still visible to web spiders, and thus reward the link spammers.
This is far past the point of worrying that a minor barrier will dissuade new users from contributing. There soon won't be anything to contribute to.

I've done hundreds of page reverts.
Right now the pages contain valid content, but at the current rate almost all will be defaced in the next few hours. The older reversions are still showing the spam links to web crawlers. This rewards the spammers.
The current approach is broken, and is wasting the time of the people that would otherwise be contributing.
Is that message clear?
