Hi all,

got my maple board yesterday. Yay!!!
Today, plugged it in but can't upload the blink sketch.

Running on a Mac OSX 10.6

What I did:
* selected Maple R3 to flash
* selected /dev/tty.usbmodem411 as port
* compiled
* upload, and that's the result.

Binary sketch size is reported above. Check it against a 100000 byte maximum. Loading via dfu-util Resetting to bootloader via DTR pulse Searching for DFU device [1EAF:0003]... dfu-util - (C) 2007 by OpenMoko Inc. This program is Free Software and has ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY
Couldn't find the DFU device: [1EAF:0003]

If I use the serial monitor, some garbage is received.

What am I missing?

Alex,
This isnt a long term solution I just want you to get code running ASAP. Try using the perpetual bootloader mode. To do this, hit the reset button, notice there are a few fast blinks and a few longer blinks. To enter perpetual bootloader mode, hit reset, and immediately following press and hold the boot button (labeled BUT). If BUT is held when the fast blinks transition to the slow blinks, then youre in perp. boot mode. NOW try to upload code.

In the meantime, I'll see if we can boot a 10.6 and recreate the problem. One question. When you hit upload without using perpetual bootloader mode (like you did the first time). The software reported " Resetting to bootloader via DTR pulse " Did the board actually reset? You can tell because it starts blinking like mad.

I hate it when things dont work out of bag, Im very sorry to hear you had trouble in the first seconds! We'll figure it out. For now, though, perpetual bootloader mode should work for you.

Hi poslathian,

thanks for the quick help.

The upload process did not reset the board when tried via DTR pulse.
But the good news: the perpetual bootloader works and I was able to upload the first sketch. Yeah!

If you need any help, I could test some things on my 10.6 if you haven't a native platform.

Yes that would be great. We have leopard and snow leopard builds, 32 and 64 bit. And we dont get the same results on them....which is frustrating. But we definitely expected, based on our tests, for the DTR reset to work in 10.6. If youd like I can get you some info on how that whole structure works that would perhaps aid in your/our debugging.

Make sure in the IDE that the serial port for maple is selected from the tools->serial ports menu before attempting to upload, that step is necessary for the reset via DTR pulse.

Hi All;
I am getting the same error while trying to communicate with my maple. Couldn't find the DFU device: [1EAF:0003]. When I try the the Reset/boot I don't see a change in the blink rate etc. Also when I plugged the board into windows I did not get a driver request. I have been successful programming Arduino's with this machine. Any help will be appreciated.thanks

Well kinda figured out the problem. I plugged in the Maple with my device manager open as soon as I saw the yellow caution USB I clicked on it and then had it load the serial port. Seems to be working now with usb/serial reset. I still question if the Reset/But is working don't see a change when I hit the but after a reset during the 6 quick blinks but have found that hitting the reset with the but button pressed turns off the led

Hey wyzarddoc!

If I understand correctly you got the automatic reset through the IDE working (so you can upload programs) but you aren't sure if the "BUT" button works to get you in perpetual bootloader mode? If Reset-while-BUT turns off the LED that means the micro is successfully in hardware bootloader mode*. The Reset-then-BUT-quickly combination (press and release Reset then very quickly hold BUT right when the LED starts blinking quickly for several seconds, which will result in the LED blinking continuously) is kind of tricky, though it is possible that the BUT is only half-working. You can double-check the later half of the functionality by writing a quick sketch puts pin 38 (the BUT button) into INPUT_PULLDOWN mode, then constantly updates the LED (pin 13 in OUTPUT mode) with the digitalRead of BUT; with this sketch running the LED should turn on/off (or off/on?) when you hold BUT down.

*: Maybe we should come up with better names like "Swiss engineering FTW" mode and "oh please oh please last resort" mode? ;)

Maybe you need to label the but with "if all else fails press here" LOL. When I plug in the usb cable the program/sketch? starts running. If I press the reset button I get 6 fast flashes during which I hit the but button I get a brief period of no led activity then a few seconds later the led starts running the program/sketch again. Unit accepts new programming over usb and loads just fine. If I hold the but button down and then press the reset button the led goes out completely until I hit the reset button again which restarts the program/sketch. I'll try your pin 38 test in the next couple of days

Hey Doc,
To get into the perpetual bootloader mode you hit reset, then immediately following press and hold BUT...until the slow blinks start. Perhaps you were missing the hold part? Also, it sounds like youre up and running now?..! If thats the case, then awesome, I will rest easy. Otherwise let us know!

As a follow up, after I did the reset/but thing, everything seems to work perfectly.
Uploading new sketches is not a problem any longer. The board gets reset and the sketch gets uploaded. No need to get into the perpetual bootloader again.

Does that make any sense?

What ever, now I'm happy that it really seems to work. Looking forward to find some time to actually do some things with it.
Kudos to leaflabs for this great board.

Rest easy I am happy and it's working so I am off to seeing what I can do with the board. Just out of curiosity what is happening when I hold the but button down and then hit the rest button while continuing to hold the but button?? led goes off and doesn't start blinking again until I hit reset.

Good question! When you hold the BUT button down and then hit reset you enter the serial bootloader mode. You can use this to upload a new bootloader, or just code you generated outside of the ide (perhaps still using our libmaple library...). Were really pleased about how well this serial bootloader mode works, armed with only an FTDI chip or an arduino, or some means of getting board level (3.3 or 5v should work) serial out from your PC you can do away completely with our IDE and bootloader and hack on as low as level as you want!

I've got a version 1 board and am having the same problem. Version 1 doesn't apparently have the BUT button - I've seen from other forum posts that there is a work around but now I can't find it/them. Can anyone point me to the "BUT"less workaround (sorry couldn't help myself)

Ok - making a little progress - well not really.

It doesn't appear that I'm ever able to get into the perpetual boot loader mode as I never get the long blinks indicated.

I've tried this procedure (and several variations)
1. Hit the Reset button -> get the 6 rapid blinks (i never got additional blinks described - just the rapid burst of 6 at beginning)
2. Hit the reset button again and quickly short a wire between vcc and 5th pin on JTAG side of ARM chip - leave the short in place for several seconds - but never get any more blue blinks

3. Subsequent presses of reset give the 6 rapid blinks again (which I believe confirms that we're NOT in perpetual boot loader mode)

This has been attempted mostly on OSX 10.6 MBP but I've also tried this on a windows XP box but the first step for windows install is to put maple into perpetual boot loader mode which is same procedure as for Mac - so it fails as expected.

Any ideas and/or recommendations?

I had same problems:

- Ubuntu 14.04, 64 bits
- dfu-utils ver 0.8
- Olimex STM32 board

Maple IDE stops at:
Binary sketch size is reported above. Check it against a 108000 byte maximum.
Loading via dfu-util
Resetting to bootloader via DTR pulse
.....

Apparently the DTR pulse doesn't reset Olimex STM32 board and "$ sudo dfu-utils -l" doesn't see the board (which is running an application).
Serial connection is detected.

In perpetual boot mode all works fine ... dfu-utils sees the board and Maple-IDE loads and starts new application.
