We havnt touched the bootloader since the Rev3 boards came out, so all boards are shipping with the same binary. However, some minor changes might have been pushed into master. I agree all of this needs to be better tracked. In the future, we will stamp the USB descriptors with the exact bootloader version so you can see what youre running via your device manager, or lsusb, or whatever your system supports.

Incidentally we can parse this info from the call to dfu-util so the ide can do a bootloader version detect, which might be useful in certain cases. So far our strategy has been to keep any system dependence on the bootloader as minimal as possible, so users would never HAVE to change it to get new features. However, one thing were probably going to do as a bootloader upgrade is to thin the size (in both ram and flash) and give you guys another (edit) 1500 Bytes or so in RAM for your sketches. This will require that the IDE autodetects the bootloader version.

Thanks for bringing this up, well keep you posted on the bootloader issue in general and i'll post some sort of standard info such as the official "version number" as well as the git hashtag of the currently shipping bootloader.

x893 - Very good point.
The school children I work with will not normally have access to any tools other than the Maple IDE, a Maple, and a dumb (i.e. not FTDI) USB cable.

It might be helpful if anybosy could give the version of the bootloader if they have a bug.
I expect, as more boards reach folks, there will be a mix of versions, so a simple approach using a sketch+IDE could be handy.

Professional can use System bootloader, jtag, swd, openocd and other tools for manage bootloader. For beginners more simple open sketch in maple-ide and upload it to board. After this - sketch say all info about bootloader and upgrade if needed (w/o any special dancing with jtag, stm gui flash, swd, etc.).

What I use is the STM's free GUI flash loader with Modern Device's USB "BUB" board.
By easily looking at the bootloader byte count, which Leaflabs provides, a person
can easily determine what version he/she has ... providing that the "byte count" did
change between versions.

Perry's Quote:

Bootloader uploads are not checksummed. Uploads using openocd and a jtag are read back from the flash and byte-by-byte compared to verify the image.

We'll probably add a CRC check to the bootloader. It's also on the stack.

I suggest simplest way to resolve this problem.
Write a small sketch which calculate checksum of 0x8000000 to 0x8004FFF.
Publish checksum of all your bootloaders and any can check BL version.
Also this sketch can flash bootloader.

Wednesday, September 8, 2010

Hello,

The link which I included above did not translate corrected by the forum software.

http://static.leaflabs.com/pub/leaflabs/maple-bootloader/

On the linked page are the bootloader bin files dated May 28 and June 16, 2010. leaflabsandy, you are correct that the "old" directory is empty.

I am using a Maple Rev 3 (summer 2010) board, which is why I suspect (but want to confirm) that I have the
maple_boot-rev3-9c5f8e.bin
version.

Thanks,

Stephen from NYC

PS to Leaflabs team- In my original post the forums software incorrectly interpreted the closing parenthesis as part of the hyperlink (so the link does not work). Besides leaving a space before the closing parenthesis is there a way to fix this problem?

Leaflabs ...

I have a June/2010 bootloader. Is there newer one created after the June/2010
for the Maple rev. 3 (red)?

Where can this new and improved bootloader be found at?
The link for the older version(s) have disappeared.

Wednesday, September 8, 2010

Hello,

I have a Maple Rev 3 (summer 2010) so I assume I have bootloader version maple_boot-rev3-9c5f8e.bin

(see http://static.leaflabs.com/pub/leaflabs/maple-bootloader/)

However, I am not sure.

Is there a simple way (perhaps a "-version" command line flag) to query a Maple board to determine which bootloader version is currently installed?

This might be another "parameter" which users can include with their system descriptions when they report to the leaflabs forum a problem with the hardware / software.

http://forums.leaflabs.com/topic.php?id=145

I want to install the newest version of the Maple bootloader (after I acquire the correct cable), but I am hoping there is a way to verify that the new bootloader has been installed:

http://forums.leaflabs.com/topic.php?id=159#post-1030

Thanks!
