@crenn, perhaps most convenient thing is that on-board ST-LINK/V2 not just programmer but hardware debugger too. And it allows to debug other boards, not just Discovery. Getting board + hardware debugger for ~$16 is a good bargain.

@caspervb - forum member ala42 has done an initial cut at libraries for the STM32F4, and making it work with the Maple IDE. It isn't finished yet, so if you are not confident, then wait. MY only point is, if you think you might want to turn a Maple II project into a permanent thing, then one of those might be a cheap option to have in your 'toy cupboard'.

It's pretty much a breakout board with a USB socket, the nice thing about it, is the programmer is built in on board! It's a lot more 'advanced' than setting up an Arduino/Maple, but it could help you develop your embedded knowledge more.

I'm going to be using it to develop a custom controller board for a RC transmitter.

Wow, so that's the same chip as the Maple II is going to have,
on a kind of breakout board with usb? How can I program this thing?

I'm all kinda new to this :o

It's cheap, but I don't know what to do with that...
I think I'll wait for the Maple II, and leave this to more experienced users :)

Caspervb - IMHO, once you have had DACs, you'll never want to go back :-)

It is likely a bit too much hassle to use today, but if you can afford it, you might want to get a STM32F4Discovery and put it in the 'toy-cupboard'.
It is only $16. When you get a bit more comfortable, it might be a fun component to port a Maple II project to.

(full disclosure: I am not a member of LeafLabs staff, not of ST Micro)

I got a mail back from the staff, the RET is out of stock.

I don't have any experience at all with SMD or breakout boards :/
The Maple II will have DAC's right? I'll wait for that to come out,
it's not really urgent, I can stick to Arduino a little longer :D

If you feel comfortable, it's completely possible to swap out the RBT6 with the RET6 if you don't feel like waiting if you have the appropriate equipment.

Alternatively, microchip or TI have free samples of DACs, so you could quite easily make your own breakout board using the RBT6 and have external DACs.

Basically these boards are identical, the only difference is MCU with more RAM, flash and additional on-chip peripherals. By the way, RET6 has on-chip DAC while RBT6 has no DAC's at all.

So there are no *essential* problems with the chipswapping?
Nothing that could hold me from doing what I want, just
because I have a Beta RET6?

Okay, ordering tomorrow :D

With RET6 you'll also have more space for your firmware. Taking into account your planned application, I think more flash will be helpful.

I'm planning to make the step from Arduino to a maple,
seen that I don't havethat much experience (1 year arduino), would it
be a good idea to buy the Beta RET6? I really like having DAC's, as
I will be making cheapo digital synths :D

Regards,
Casper
