running ubuntu 12.04 none of the suggestions herein fixed this for me until I renamed 45-maple-rules to 54-maple-rules. The interfering settings were coming from /lib/udev/ruels.d/50-udev-default.rules so any number over 50 at the front of maple-rules should work.

I grepped for dialout in /lib/udev to figure this out.

Yes, In can reproduce this problem on my Precise 12.04 LTS install. After setting the udev-tty.rules the right group got hacked in there.

UPDATE: After loading 64-bit maple-ide-0.0.9 into a second folder, I copied librxtxSerial.so and RXTXcomm.jar from the 64-bit maple-ide-0.0.9/lib to the 32-bit maple-ide-v0.0.12/lib and NOW the ttyACM0 port is detected and displayed along with the anomalous ttyS0.

There REALLY needs to be a 64-bit Linux version of .12!

I recently installed maple-ide version 0.0.12 into my Linux Mint-13-XFCE amd64 system (same base as Ubuntu 12.04). Plugging in a Maple-mine r3 into a usb port assigned is as:
crw-rw-r-- 1 root dialout 166, 0 Jan 5 17:37 /dev/ttyACM0

However, the ide only displays /dev/ttyS0, which has nothing attached to it. This is true is run as user or root since my userid is assigned to both the dialout and plugdev groups.

After installing /etc/udev/rules.d/45-maple.rules, the node /dev/maple is created but the ttyACM0 remains assigned to the dialout group and the ide still only displays /dev/ttyS0

After installing /etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev-tty.rules, as described by 'adam', herein, the port is correctly assigned to plugdev.
crw-rw-r-- 1 root plugdev 166, 0 Jan 5 17:37 /dev/ttyACM0
Unfortunately, the ide still only displays /dev/ttyS0

No joy with the ide on Linux!

Is this a 32-bit vs 64-bit issue?? I noticed, while poking around in the RXTX java source, that there were 32 and 64 bit versions of the RXTX comm driver. Possibly I have a 32 bit version?

Hmm, there certainly needs to be some more hunting here. The install script udev rules, and /dev/maple remapping never worked for me. I got it working in debian lenny via manually adding myself to plugdev and creating plugdev, but the /dev/maple remap still doesnt work. In general, it seems were starting to get a pile of people running as root to avoid extra hassle here. Thanks for pointing out this fix, im sure it will apply to others!

I don't know why it was not working the Ubuntu 9.10 version I was using. Now, however...

Whoops, I mean, a distupgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. The upgrade worked, I uninstalled my custom rule file and the old file, and installed the one you reference above. That worked fine - I can plug and unplug my Maple board, and can see the /dev/ttyACM0 entry in the Serial Port menu. The IDE automatically selects it.

All is well!

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 on a Mac Pro hardware with a custom kernel. I can't post the uname and udev info right now because it's at home, but will look at it tonight.

However... I also ran a distupgrade this morning to upgrade to 10.10... so may not have the problem anymore. I will try to remove my rule file and use the current rule file that you list above and report back.

I'm curious why the bundled
45-maple.rules
file didn't work for you; I originally wrote it on Ubuntu 9.10 64bit and it's always worked for us in testing. As you can see it tries to set the group for the Maple to "plugdev"; your version would apply to all CDC_ACM devices which should be fine for most people but might ruffle some feathers.

Could you post your kernel (
uname -a
) and udev version (
udev --version
)? And if you have the time could you give the latest version a try? I had to switch from SYSFS to ATTRS for the newer version of udev in Ubuntu 10.04; this should be backwards compatible.

Here's the new version of that file (http://github.com/leaflabs/maple-ide/blob/master/build/linux/dist/45-maple.rules ):

<br />
ATTRS{idProduct}=="1001", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0110", MODE="664", GROUP="plugdev"<br />
ATTRS{idProduct}=="1002", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0110", MODE="664", GROUP="plugdev"<br />
ATTRS{idProduct}=="0003", ATTRS{idVendor}=="1eaf", MODE="664", GROUP="plugdev" SYMLINK+="maple"<br />
ATTRS{idProduct}=="0004", ATTRS{idVendor}=="1eaf", MODE="664", GROUP="plugdev" SYMLINK+="maple"<br />

Other issues that have caught me up in the past are having the correct permissions on the .rules file and remembering to restart udev.

Bnewbold and Perry,

Yes, I ran the install-udev-rules.sh script, and have the 45-maple.rules file installed. I was also member of the dialout group - I tried both of these first!

However, they didn't work for me - I still had to run the maple-ide as root to use the serial port. After installing the additional rule file, all worked ok.

Hey adamfeuer!

Did you run the
install-udev-rules.sh
script as described in the Quickstart and Installation docs? We bundle a
45-maple.rules
file that is very similar to what you have above:

BUS!="usb", ACTION!="add", SUBSYSTEM!=="usb_device", GOTO="maple_rules_end"

SYSFS{idProduct}=="1001", SYSFS{idVendor}=="0110", MODE="664", GROUP="plugdev"
SYSFS{idProduct}=="1002", SYSFS{idVendor}=="0110", MODE="664", GROUP="plugdev"
SYSFS{idProduct}=="0003", SYSFS{idVendor}=="1EAF", MODE="664", GROUP="plugdev"
SYSFS{idProduct}=="0004", SYSFS{idVendor}=="1EAF", MODE="664", GROUP="plugdev"

LABEL="maple_rules_end"

FWIW i'm actually debugging this rules file on Ubuntu 10.04 where it doesn't seem to work as reliably; a possible alternative is:

ATTRS{idProduct}=="0003", ATTRS{idVendor}=="1eaf", MODE="664", GROUP="plugdev"
ATTRS{idProduct}=="0004", ATTRS{idVendor}=="1eaf", MODE="664", GROUP="plugdev" SYMLINK+="maple"
