joyzhou - "(1) The menu item "Tools->Serial Port" is gray."

A Maple may be either one of two different USB devices. When it is running a normal user program, it is a USB serial device. When the bootloader is running it is a USB DFU device and will not show up as a Serial port because it isn't one; it's a USB DFU device.

"(2) When I run the IDE as root, it's OK. I tried all Serial ports, including ttyACM0, with serial monitor, none of them works."
As explained above, the Maple might not be a USB Serial device, so you might never see it.

There are threads explaining part of the problem around accessing Maple and how to set the device access (search for udev):

Hi, Guys.
I tried maple under win7-32bit, but failed.
So I turned to Linux Mint 14 MATE 32-bit.
I followed this page
http://leaflabs.com/docs/maple-ide-install.html#maple-ide-install-linux
and got the IDE to work.

I can compile a sketch and upload to the Maple Mini.
(Push the reset button on maple board while uploading seems a little inconvenient)

Problems:
(1) The menu item "Tools->Serial Port" is gray.
(2) When I run the IDE as root, it's OK. I tried all Serial ports, including ttyACM0, with serial monitor, none of them works.
(3) I am already a member of the "dialout" group.
(4) I am also already a member of the "plugdev" group.
Could anyone point out why?
Thanks a lot!
